Strong sales of Lodge Cast Iron Cookware throughout the past decade necessitated the addition of a third manufacturing line; the expansion increases capacity by approximately 50%. The company produces over 120 cast iron cookware and serving items for domestic and international markets. Featuring two 10-ton furnaces, the new Lodge melt center began operation in February 2104. In November and December of 2014, a new mold system, cleaning systems and a seasoning line were integrated into the production process. The expansion has altered this small community’s skyline, with two new sand towers, standing 119 feet and 97 feet tall, used for the production and recycling of sand cast molds. The second phase of the expansion includes updating two older production lines installed in the 1990s. When the updates are completed, Lodge Manufacturing Company will have the world’s most technologically advanced cast iron cookware foundry. Founded by Joseph Lodge in 1896, Lodge is the sole domestic manufacturer of seasoned cast iron cookware and it is the oldest family owned cookware company in the country. It took place a few years ago before feral hogs were as abundant and annoying as they are today. The names have been changed to protect the innocent and the guilty, the winner and the loser, and the marriage! Straight shooting Accurate Ace was a meat hunter who didn’t gain his name from missing whatever he aimed to put on the table or in the freezer. The fact that he had several admirable shoulder mounts of whitetail bucks on his wall was incidental. It just happened Lady Luck somehow always managed to be at Ace’s side when he was hunting whitetails. Ace was fortunate to have a redheaded outdoors oriented female as his wife and constant hunting companion. Naturally she was called Red. Although an experienced hunter, Red had no shoulder mounts as her bucks never came close to the fine ones Ace killed. Instead, her antlers were mounted on small wooden plaques hung in the garage or utility room for holding caps and hats. A wild turkey tail fan sported a leather string full of beards; only one belonged to Red. She enjoyed doves, quail, ducks, geese, rabbits, frogs, and squirrels because she cleaned and cooked them. Ace would limit out ready to head home before Red’s shotgun or .22 even warmed up. There was often discussion (key word) when this would happen so Ace would grudgingly stay long enough for Red to shoot one more of whatever they were hunting at the time. Ace poofed it off when comments were made on his skillful hunting. He’d be modest and try to steer the conversation to something else although you could visibly see his head and chest swell just a tiny bit. Most often Ace would simply say it was a matter of being in the right place at the right time…and that, my friend, is the basis of this story! Ace and Red were on a new hunting lease with evidence of hosting feral hogs. Now neither one had ever taken a wild porker but the prospect made Ace’s green eyes shine like a spotlight, er…headlight hitting deer eyeballs at night. The landowner’s rules were tough as no trapping, using dogs, or night hunting was allowed. Hogs had to be taken by natural light and sharp shooting only during deer season. Hog tracks and rooting were everywhere but no one had actually laid eyes on one of the wily creatures. Ace desired a portly pig so much so that he tagged out on his deer right away to solely concentrate hard on putting pork on the dinner table. It didn’t make any difference. The swine were smart, doing all their feeding and traveling under the cover of darkness. Ace soon became disheartened as he hunted every chance for rooters with no success. He found it hard to tolerate what the landowner governed but being a law abiding hunter and rule following citizen, he obeyed. The man wasn’t happy about it, often voicing his opinion to his fellow hunters. Red just let his words go in one ear and out the other as she was used to his belly aching – she had to listen to him during every trip to deer camp and then back to home! Giving up never occurred to the obsessed hunter. He was hard headed, determined, and stubborn as a mule (Red’s exact words). He hunted a stationary stand. He moved a portable tripod to various ranch areas setting up on well used and barely visible game trails. He camouflaged from head to toe using every malodorous scent on the market plus a couple he made up – phew! Ace hung out in trees. He laid low near water holes. Carrying out hundreds of pounds of corn Ace only brought back a couple of ticks, some painful thorns, and a severely bruised ego. The crafty critters were beginning to get the best of the skillful clever hunter as he continued his quest over and over again. Then one evening near the end of deer season it was well after dark when two hunters had not yet returned to camp. There was much speculation as to what was keeping them. One hunter said he’d heard Bruno shoot and it sounded like a solid hit so perhaps they were searching for a big buck. Finally headlights were seen in the distance. As the pickup pulled under an outdoor lighted cleaning rack there commenced loud whooping and hollering from the occupants inside the truck and those peering over the side of the bed. Ace’s chin hit the ground with a thud before he snapped his jaws shut as he gazed at the object of his hunting affliction and current fixation. Bruno opened the tailgate and sat down on it with an audible grunt of satisfaction. Reaching around, he grabbed the tattered ear of a massive feral boar, stretching the animal out almost the entire inside length of the long bed pickup. It was big and ugly with a capital U. ## Pages - [Home](https://towa.org/) - A Voice for the Outdoors Texas based media organization for all professional communicators, and product manufacturers - [Youth Excellence In Craft Contest 2026](https://towa.org/youth-excellence-in-craft-contest-2026/) - TOWA Youth EIC Photography Contest 2027 Rules and Guidelines PURPOSE: The TOWA Photography Contest encourages self-expression and allows youth to demonstrate skills learned in the area of photography, including the use of photographic equipment and processing of photographs.
