Congratulations to Ashleigh Epps. She has been chosen as the 2021 Bob Hood Scholarship winner by the Texas Outdoor Writer’s Association Scholarship Committee.
Ashleigh gives her personal thanks!
Thank you to everyone at the Texas Outdoor Writer’s Association for awarding me with the Bob Hood Scholarship and to the donors for making this scholarship possible! I am honored to be the scholarship recipient and take the utmost pride in dedicating my time to environmental conservation and stewardship. I am currently a master’s student in the Bahr Marine Ecology Lab at Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi studying cryptic corals and their ecology in the Coastal Bend area. Along with my studies, I am committed to making a positive impact within the environment through my business, Corals to Morals, where I promote sustainable living through selling apparel made of recycled plastic bottles. Through our research group, I lead our sustainability initiatives which include beach clean-ups on our campus and within the community. Soon we will be expanding this project to local K-12 schools to teach children about careers in science and environmental conservation.
Prior to my graduate education I attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa where I received my Bachelor of Science degree in marine biology. During my education I had the incredible opportunity to work with the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary which encompasses citizen science to observe the population and ecology of humpback whales throughout their mating season. Volunteering with the HIHWNMS lead me to conducting my own science communication project addressing coral reef degradation and how tourists visiting Hawaii can help. This video is available to the public through the Corals to Morals social media and website. This award greatly helps fund my education by offsetting my tuition costs and allows me to dedicate more time to outdoor conservation and science communication.
Thank you to TOWA and the donors once again for providing a wonderful organization that gives back to people and nature, and for making this award possible, I greatly appreciate it!”
